CHRISTMAS FOOD & WINE PAIRING

Apéritifs

To accompany smoked salmon, prawns, canapés, best to opt for a crisp vibrant style eg. Sauvignon Blanc such as a Domaine Sancerre or a Domaine Pouilly Fumé or for something different perhaps a Grüner Veltliner, a Vinho Verde or why not a nice dry Rhone Rosé? Always opt for the freshest vintage.

3 Rios Vinho Verde "[...] full of ripe, fleshy stone fruit character with a saline freshness bringing welcome structure to the soft, round mouthfeel. This would do justice to a whole roast turbot or other meaty fish." Wine of the Week, Aoife Carrigy, Irish Independent,  24/10/2020

Main Course

For turkey and ham a good oaked Chardonnay or a white Châteauneuf-du-Pape would be great. For red a good partner would be a Premier Cru Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits. Or why not try our highly rated Napa Valley Pinot Noir from Failla Winery.

Failla Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2018 "A very seductive ripe Pinot with elegant sweet dark cherry fruits and cassis" John Wilson, The Irish Times, 06/2020

For those who opt for Beef or lamb a good Bordeaux with some bottle age from vintages 2010, 2012 or 2016 would be a great option. Alternatively a good Rioja Reserva, a Barolo or a big rich juicy Malbec from Argentina.

Dessert

Tawny Port is a great all-rounder for dessert, as it can be consumed chilled with pudding or room temp with cheeses. As it is an oxidised style wine it can be kept open for a couple of months.

Graham's 20 Year Old Tawny, 17 Points Jancis Robinson "Pale-medium tawny amber. Curry spice, dark chocolate and clove oak. Good freshness, bringing some dried red and black fruit to support the spice and dark-chocolate style. Long, smoky, dark-chocolate finish with quite well-integrated alcohol." April 2019

A fresh fruity Sauternes with intense honeyed fruit, orange zest and tropical fruit is a perfect match for a Christmas pudding.

Tour Blanche, Sauternes, 17 Points Jancis Robinson "Spicy citrus and dried grasses. Rich apricot sweetness and impressive intensity and length. Power and showy, very very sweet but balanced." January 2017
